For the past 6 months or so, my beloved Technics SL-PG460A CD Player has been skipping badly on the first few tracks of any cd, whether it be a copy or not. It plays the remaining 70% of the cds flawlessly, it just seems to be the first few tracks that jump. Does this sound like a tracking error to you? Knowing nothing about the technicalities of cd players I wouldn't know how to fix it.

I was going to by a cheap cd lens cleaner off ebay but don't want to waste my money on one unless its actually going to solve the problem. Will this help or am I better of handing it into a tech to have it realigned?:scratch2. There's a thing or two that you can try, but.
It is, after all, a CD player, and therefore designed to be run over by your car or lit ablaze in the Weber and danced around when something goes wrong with it. Pop the hood and clean the lens with some Windex and a cotton swab, and take some very light lubrication (like 3 in 1 oil or something) on a swab and clean/lube the rails that the lens rides on. Unless that crap is all plastic and there are no rails, in which case clean the lens, look for obvious things that keep it from tracking properly, put it together and if it doesn't work, use it for a shot put.

Then go down to Best Circuit-Mart and buy whatever the cheapest thing they have that will play CD's is, cuz THEYRE ALL SHIT! Well, thats my opinion, anyway.

Cleaning is the trick I've cleaned quite a few cdp's (not all!) back to life when they started to skip tracks or got stock in the middle of tracks. What I did was to clean the metal pole/rail that the laser is gliding on with alcohol (isopropyl alcohol its call here) and relubricated it with a special teflon paste a friend gave me when I was putting my vintage motorcycle engine back together. Some other kind of non-organic heat resistante (?) lubricante will do - I'm sure some special cdp grease exists somewhere.
Peter, Denmark. And if all the above does not work you could then point the blame at the spindle motor. In order to keep a constant tangential velocity of the pick-up to disc, the motor must vary the angular velocity of the disc.
For the inner tracks (low track numbers) the motor has to run faster. An older motor with a bit of wear on it, or rubbish on the commutator/brushes, will not be able to reliably reach the correct speed.
You could try some contact cleaner into some of the spindle motor vent holes (not the bearing please). This may help for a while by clearing rubbish of the commutator. If this does help and the symptoms re-appear in a few months then the motor need replacing.
Some Techincs decks were fitted with brushless motors and thus won't have this problem. Click to expand.Hmmmm.first of all i wouldnt have used the windex, it can leave i streaky film on the lenz. You may want to use some rubbing alcohol ( isopropyl ) with a clean q-tip and clean the rails off before you lube them.you can lube the rails with some 3n1 oil or some other light weight lube/oil, vegetable oil may work for a while.if it was working before you tried to clean it and now it is not.
